Candyman (2021) - Episode 207

This week on Black on Black Cinema, the crew returns to discuss the 2021 horror film, Candyman. This is the spiritual successor to the original film of the same name from 1992. This new film picks up years later in Chicago once again. For decades, the housing projects of Chicago's Cabrini-Green were terrorized by a ghost story about a supernatural, hook-handed killer. In the present day, an artist begins to explore the macabre history of Candyman, not knowing it would unravel his sanity and unleash a terrifying wave of violence that puts him on a collision course with destiny.

The film follows a racist woman who makes it her personal mission to displace the new Black family that has just moved in next door to her. A community activist and his wife is the couple she's targeting -- but they won't back down without a fight. The random topic this week is about giving living Black actors their credit while they are still with us in the wake of the untimely death of Michael K. Williams

 

 

 

Miss Evers‘ Boys - Episode 205

This week on Black on Black Cinema, the crew returns with special guest Elizabeth from the "Truth...Lies...Shenanigans" Podcast. This week we discuss the 1997 film "Miss Evers' Boys" starring Alfre Woodard and Laurence Fishburne. The film tells the story of the Tuskegee experiment, a U.S. Federal Government secret medical experiment on poor African American men in the years 1932–1972, designed to study the effects of untreated syphilis. The story is told from the perspective of the small town nurse Eunice Evers (Alfre Woodard) who is well aware of the lack of treatment but feels her role is to console the involved men, many of whom are her close friends.
